Little Harbor Window Co. takes great pride in the manufacturing
process we use to build our doors. We build all exterior doors using a
“stave core construction”. This is a process that uses pieces of solid wood
glued together to form the core of the door stiles and veneer a ¼” clear
veneer piece to the exterior and interior surfaces.(see AWI premium grade
standards)

After gluing the core pieces together, we allow the core to sit for several
days so that any stress within the pieces will have time to move. We then
flat join the piece and put it through our molder once to dimension it and
then let it sit again before gluing the veneers on. After the veneers have
been glued to the core, we let it sit again for several days before putting the
finished piece through the molder for final dimensioning and profiling. This
adds time to the process but we feel it is worth it to ensure the door stiles
will remain straight and true.

Like all of our products, we use a PVA two part waterproof adhesive to
make the stiles as well as gluing the mortise and tenon joints together. Once
the door has been built and sized, and all weather-strip cuts have been
made, we coat the top and bottom of the door with West System Marine
Epoxy prior to priming to keep moisture from wicking into the door through
the end grain of the stiles. This extra step helps stabilize the stile/rail
joinery and helps prevent components from delaminating.
